Envision Division Art Installation Series |

Developed in partnership with Architecture for Humanity, these art installations were used to gather community input on the community’s design vision for Division Street in SE Portland. Each installation was custom designed and built for its hosted location, engaging local businesses as partners to care-take the boxes and review and restock the vision cards. Large laser cut “Your Voice Matters – Envision Division” wooden speech bubble signs were mounted above each installation to draw attention to the project. Boxes included printing presses, old radios, jewlry boxes, raffle bins, bird houses, and other art up and down the Division corridor. We wanted to make sure we reached the community that walks, shops, dines, works, and lives along or near Division first hand so locations were selected to represent a diversity of places community members would frequent (yoga, grocery, bar, restaurant, retail shops, etc) as well as the modes they might be traveling especially walking, biking, and bus riding.
Large write-in “mad-lib” vision cards were included which provided interactive fill-in the blanks feedback in a playful yet valuable manner accompanied by small business cards with links to an online survey community members could take to give more detailed input on the future of the corridor. We held design/build events on the street to engage the public and created how-to instructions for the public to make their own as well. The boxes were designed to be reused in other Portland neighborhoods and business districts as needed for community input.
These boxes were so successful we received over 450 vision cards at over 10 locations. Want to do a similar project in your neighborhood? Let us know!
